This rivalry
can be summed up in just a few words: One of the greatest
sports rivalries of all time. Period. Wilt and his nemesis
Bill Russell, put together careers that will live in NBA
history books forever. Not for just championships, but more
for the 2 powerhouses they represented on the court. The on
and off court rivalry of these two Tower of Powers was
legendary. While Wilt clearly surpassed Russell in man to
man competition, it was Russell who walked away with 11 NBA
titles compared to Chamberlain's 2, in 1967 with the
Philadelphia 76ers, and in 1972 with the Lakers. Below we've
put together some interesting facts and tid bits that will
make you stay pleasant. submit your take on this rivalry.
Who was Greater? Who ended up on top? Sound off
55
Rebounds vs Bill Russell? Yes! On Nov 24th, 1960,
Wilt Chamberlain had the most rebounds in a single game, 55,
but lost to a Bill Russell led Boston Celtics team 132-129.
Russell scored 18 points, 19rebounds and 5 assists.
Chamberlain totals were 34 points, 55 rebounds and 4
assists. Again though, a Celtics victory happened which was
typically the result when these 2 played eachother.
Take that Russ. Did you know, between the
years 1961-63, Wilt scored 50 or more points on the Boston
Celtics 6 times? With one of those being a 62 point outing.
Did you know? Chamberlain signed a contract with the
San Francisco Warriors in 1965-66 for $100,000, Russell then
had his Celtic contract renegotiated for $100,001.
Records! [the 1961-62
season]
Wilt Chamberlain holds
the highest single season scoring ave. of 50.4 points per
game. He also owns the single season ave. for most rebounds
per game: 27.2
Wilt played for the Philadelphia Warriors that season.
Interesting fact about Wilt's 50 pt average. During that
season, he scored 50 in 4 games against the Boston Celtics.
Russell sat out 4 games that year, so it is not known
whether Wilt scored those points against Russell... but I
find it interesting. Also, the Warriors and the Celtics met
12 times that year...with the Celtics winning 8. Can we say
teamwork?
Public knowledge. In 1968 Wilt led the league
in assists. Why? The Big Dipper got sick and tired of
hearing that all he could do was shoot. So Wilt did what All
gamers do...went out and showed them that he was truely well
rounded in game.
Chamberlain holds the single game "most points", 100 – a
mark nobody else has even come close too since.
